When painting with acrylics, one of the most popular ways to add color is by mixing your colors directly onto already painted surfaces. This technique is called layering or adding on top!
Acrylic paint comes in all sorts of shapes, sizes, brands, and colors. Almost every artist has their favorite brand. There are many types of acrylic paints; some dry more quickly than others. Some gel (or thinned down) faster, taking less time to layer and mix together.
Some artists prefer using non-toxic materials so if you’re not sure what kind of paint you want to use, be careful about how much you use and where it goes! We recommend buying online vendors that offer good quality products and have great reviews.
There are several easy ways to create beautiful layers of skin tone makeup with acrylics. In this article, we will go through three different methods for creating natural looking skin tones with our preferred brand – Behr Premium Acrylic Painting Materials.
Mix the paint with a little bit of water
The second way to make your skin look lightened or darkened is by mixing the color with a lighter or darker color, respectively. For example, if you wanted to go lighter, you could mix white acrylic paint with another shade of white or cream colored paint!
This would depend on what effect you want to achieve. If you want to completely whiten the paint, then use very few drops of dark paint in a large area. As for darkness, add more of the same type of paint to create an interesting pattern or texture.
There are many ways to do this! It all depends on how much control you want to have over the colors.
Use a paintbrush to apply the paint
There are many ways to use acrylic paints for creating vibrant, rich skin tones. The easiest way is to simply pour the liquid color onto your hand and then using a brush, add drops of water to mix with the liquid.
As you create your design, remember that thinner colors blend into each other more, so be careful not to overdo it! When the painting is complete, let it dry completely before applying the second layer. You can also wash off the painted skin with warm or cold water, depending on the texture of the paint.
Acrylics are very durable materials which mean you can go one step further in the process by protecting your art work. Acrylic paintings can be mixed together and layered, which gives you even more creativity opportunities.
Let the paint dry
When painting with acrylics, your first step is to make sure you have all of your materials and equipment ready. Once you finished applying the color onto the surface, it’s important to let it dry!
Acrylic paints are very water-based so they will typically set and harden in about 24 hours. If you like, you can speed up this process by putting the painted piece under a light source or into an area that contains air (like a plastic bag).
After the skin tone has completely dried, use a soft brush to blend the colors together.
Use a colored tissue or paper to create the skin tone
In creating your face, you can use two main colors for the complexion. One is typically called a under-painting, as it sets the base color of the skin. This color does not need to be very detailed, just an overall wash of color that covers most of the skin area will do!
After this initial layer of paint has dried, you can add another layer of color onto the painted surface. This second layer of color is usually a darker toned powdery blush or cream color. Some people also mix their blush in a bronzer bottle which contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide to achieve more natural looking shades.
Use a lighter colored tissue or paper to create the skin tone
The next step is creating your face layer. To do this, you will need a light color tissue or piece of paper as skin material. You can use any light neutral color such as white, cream, light brown, etc.
To complete the painted face, repeat these steps with the other facial features: eye shape, nose shape, mouth shape, and ear shapes.
Use a dark colored tissue or paper to create the skin tone
In order to make your painted face look more natural, you need to layer up different colors of paint. Starting with a light color for the skin, like white, mix it into an additional toner or background color that is very close in hue to the skin.
A common choice for this is black since most people have some degree of darkness in their complexion!
Once that is mixed in, apply another coat of white acrylic paint to completely cover the first coating. Let dry and repeat until you get the desired effect.
Remember, when painting with oils or watercolors, there are no rules about how many layers you can put on your piece! You can keep layering as many times as needed until it looks perfect.
With acrylics though, the way to go is usually just one or two coats per part of the design unless otherwise stated.
Mix the paint with a little bit of water
A beginner can start experimenting with acrylic painting by trying to create effects using different shades of skin colour. When starting out, try your hand as light touches or strokes only!
Acrylic paints are mixed in a liquid form and can be applied directly onto any surface- you do not have to use a piece of paper first.
You will want to mix your colors together properly before applying them to ensure they blend well and stay consistent.
Use a paintbrush to apply the paint
When painting with acrylics, you will need some sort of brush! There are many different types of brushes that artists use for various purposes.
You do not have to own every type of brush, but it is helpful to know what each one does. For example, a round brush is good for creating shapes such as circles or lines.
A flat brush is useful for applying even layers of color onto your canvas or skin tone matching. You can also use these to blend colors together.
A half-flat brush has slightly rounded edges, which are great for blending small amounts of darker and lighter shades together.
Acrylic gel medium is a very important tool in the process of painting with acrylics. It acts like glue, helping the paints stick to each other and the surface you are laying them on.
It helps give the painted piece texture and consistency.
