Paint mountains are a classic paint-and-choose challenge. There is no right or wrong way to paint them!vierdeursorgcom/videor/teachingvideo/paraglidingmountain painting tutorial
The challenge is to find a less traveled path through the mountain, and then carefully layer your brushstrokes to create the crater or crevasse you want in your mountain.
This challenge can be done in many ways, so there is no generic way to do it. Some artists choose to use different mediums or combine styles with other challenges.
Create the base of the mountain
Once you have your mountain top and bottom prepared, it is time to add the detail. Create the base of your mountian by adding some rock or terrain around your area.
To add more detail, add some leaves, a stream, and other terrain features. Add some interesting shapes such as caves, crevices, and secluded vantage points.
Creating these details can be done in several ways. You can use regular drug store paint such as blue or brown, lake water paint, chalk paint, or a mixture of both. The best way to get the right amount of detail is to take your finished product to a painter for help.
Some people use sandpaper to create the edge of their mountain.
Create the shape of the mountain
Once you have your base color, you must choose how to create the shape of the mountain. You can either:
– Add a layer of white on top of the black, or add a new color to the mix
– Add a new dimension to the space such as adding a rooftop or natural stone
– Mix two or more colors to create an interesting pattern
Your mountain must be painted in sections, like when painting an orphanage window. You must give it some time to dry before next steps can be taken.
Paint the shadows on the mountain
Once you have the basic shape of the mountain, the next step is to paint the shadows on the mountain. Many artists use a soft-ish brush with this and just sweep it over the mountain to paint the shadows.
This is a very important part of this art technique, so make sure to do it!
If you want a more defined outline for your painting, use a smaller brush or thinner material. If you want a greater amount of saturation in your painting, use a thicker brush or harder material.
To keep this post short and to the point, we will just mention that paint the shadows on the mountain using an acrylics.
Add snow at the top of the mountain
Once you have the basics of painting acrylic on the table, the next most obvious thing is to paint mountains. Luckily, there are many ways to do this!
You can start with a bottom-up approach, painting the darkest areas first, or a top-down approach, painting the lightest areas first. Either way, you will gain some great lessons in this art style.
One of the best ways to learn how to paint acrylic mountains is to design a map and then attempt one mountain after another. You will need some patience and trial and error, but once you get the hang of it, you will be able to finish many paintings in no time.
Many art teachers use top-down and bottom-up methods when teaching art digitally via computer or phone apps.
Add more snow at the bottom of the mountain
If you want to paint a different color scheme or texture on the mountains, then you can do so! If you want more details in the snow, then use more paint!
How to add more paint? Add some distressingly large blisters on top of the mountain. If you use a darker color, this will work better. Or add some large chasms that stretch below the mountain.
Either way, these mountains that look like they are bleeding should be painted. Using a thick brush and strong media will help get the job done correctly. Once dry, brush some waxes or grasses onto them to protect them from weathering.
Paint some trees at the bottom of the mountain
Try painting some of the trees at the bottom of the mountain with acrylic paint. You will need a long paintbrush to get all of the desired coverage that you want on these trees.
Once you have your painted trees, transfer them to a canvas or paper and start planning your details.
You can add some leaves, cattails, and other vegetation that grows on top of the mountain. Or you can try adding some fur, feathers, or bark.
A good tip: When painting trees, keep an eye out for foliage near the bottom of the tree. If you pass through it, then you will have missed some potential plant life.
Paint some buildings at the bottom of the mountain
Once you have your mountain range, it is time to paint. You can start with a bottom-up approach, or move up the scale as the project progresses. The key is to start with some neutral colors and add more detail as you go.
The easiest way to paint buildings is to start with a light coat of white and add a darker color around it until it is the darkest color in your range. This can be done in several ways: using regular acrylics, Pastel Palettes, or Paint Brush Sets.
If you use the Paint Set method, you must be careful not to use too much white or the paint will dry out. Also, if you use the White/Darker Color principle, then those two colors must be very similar in tone so that nothing overpowers the painting.
Create a clear blue sky with clouds
Once you have the basic shape and color of the sky, it is time to add the details. You can add some distant clouds, a high blossom tree, and a soft spring breeze.
To create this look, you must use darks and lights to create the shape of the sky. The light must come from above so that there is a dark background.
Then, use very light creamy taupe or warm browns to paint the clouds. If you want a more dramatic look, add some strong reds and pinks.
Finally, paint some soft fluffy clouds that shift in color as the sun rises. This looks very nice because they dim and fade as the day progresses.
