Acrylic is one of the most common media used for airbrushing. It is typically categorized as either oil-based or water-based acrylics. The term “acrylic” actually refers to both types! Oil-base acrylics are usually mixed with oils such as linseed, olive, mineral, or vegetable oil that acts as a solvent to help it dry. Water-based acrylic paint does not contain any type of oily liquid and must be mixed together with distilled water (or chemical free water) before use.
There are several reasons why people enjoy painting with acrylics. First, they can mix their paints easily by adding some of the liquid material to the already liquid form. This helps them achieve more detailed designs and shapes than using other mediums like brushes or knives! Second, acrylics do not need time to fully cure or harden which means you can work on your design immediately after applying the coat of paint! And lastly, acrylics are very durable and will keep its shape much longer than other mediums.
This article will go over how to use an airbrush properly using oil-based or water-based acrylic paint. There are three main components to have ready when spraying: compressor, hose, and tip.
Know the difference between oil and acrylic paint
When working with airbrushing, you will need to know what kind of paint you have! There are two main types: oil-based or water-based.
Oil-based paints contain oils as a solvent that can be used to mix the paint together. These include regular acrylics and gel pens made from polymerized oils.
Acrylic is the more common type of paint to use when beginning because it is easier to find at most art supply stores and it is less expensive. However, not all acrylic paints are created equal!
Some brands of acrylic paint contain large amounts of additives such as butane gas which can potentially explode if exposed to an open flame. This could very easily happen if someone were to burn your brush while trying to clean it!
It is important to read your artist’s manual and test out some small samples of each color before buying a larger quantity.
Buy your airbrush paint kit
A lot of people begin painting with acrylics later, so they buy cheap paints that are not very good. These artists start using better quality materials and improving their skills as painters!
Acrylic is a chemical compound that can be mixed together and painted or sprayed onto surfaces. Almost every artist needs some kind of acrylic paint at least once in their artistic career!
There are many brands of acrylic paint out there for different purposes. Some are much more expensive than others, but all work well when used properly.
The most important thing about buying acrylic paint is to know what size bottle you need. Make sure it does not contain too much liquid since these bottles do not seal well.
Make a good cleaning and maintenance routine
When painting with acrylics, making sure your materials are clean is of upmost importance!
Acrylic paint can easily be mixed together and painted onto different surfaces, but it will not stick or dry properly if there are leftover chemical compounds in the container. These residual chemicals can affect how well the paint sets up and coats the surface you apply it to.
Leftover rubbing alcohol, for example, will contain acetone, which can cause skin irritation and eye damage. Glutaraldehyde comes off plastic containers as a powder that may irritate exposed areas like eyes and mouths.
Regularly checking your brush bristles for glue residue and washing them thoroughly is important too because some paints require special brushes and these can sometimes have glued-on residues. Specialty brushes cost quite a bit so it is worth investing in quality ones to keep them working smoothly.
Lastly, never mix brands of acrylic paint directly into another brand’s empty bottle – even if they seem same otherwise! Different manufacturers use different mixing agents and additives that change the properties of the liquid.
Mix colors
When painting with airbrushes, one of the first things you will need is your mix palette! These have lids that can be placed either next to the bottle of paint or in a separate tray to contain extra color mixes.
The best mix palettes have an adjustable knob so you can increase or decrease the amount of each color mixture you have at your disposal. This helps in creating more intricate designs due to having enough supplies available to you.
You also do not want to run out of main colors as this can limit the types of designs you are able to create.
Apply paint
The second way to use acrylic is as a painting medium! This can be done several ways, but one of the most popular methods is called “painting with a brush.” You take your desired color of acryllic paint and mix it with another material such as oil or water to create a liquid form of the paint.
This painted media can then be spread onto your surface using a brush or roller. As mentioned before, you can also use a spray bottle to direct-spray the painted media.
The best tip I have for you if you are new to airbrushing is to try experimenting with different types of sprayed paints! There are so many different styles and looks that you will never run out of possibilities.
Create designs
A very popular way to use airbrushing is as a medium for creating beautiful, intricate designs. You can create your own unique designs or you can choose from many pre-made styles and palettes of paint.
There are three main components of designing with airbrush painting – fluid lines, washes and textures. Fluid lines refer to spraying small areas of pure color or outlining an area to give it depth. Washes are similar to fluid lines but have an additional element such as dry brushing or fogging.
A wash will go over another layer to show where one liquid ends and the other begins. Textures are also used frequently in airbrush design. Different brushes can be sprayed directly onto different materials and then smoothed out to add interest.
Take your time to experiment with these concepts so that you can achieve beautifully designed looks.
Use proper ventilation
When painting with airbrushes, your first consideration should be how you are going to vent all of the paint that is being sprayed. This can easily be done by using appropriate ventilation systems!
Most airbrush users use an external supply hose connected to a vacuum or compressor. The spray nozzle connects to this external source via a valve system so that you do not have to run out and buy one separate from the gun.
However, these hoses cannot always be used effectively as they sometimes get tangled up or clogged up. If this happens, you will need to start spraying directly into the air or onto a surface which may lead to some very unhappy results.
Having an internal fan system is much better than nothing at all, but make sure it works properly before using it for important projects. An internal fan usually uses ambient air to create a flow of air through the gun.
This way there is no longer needed connection to an external device, but you still need to ensure that it functions correctly otherwise people could potentially suffer due to lack of breathable air. Testing your gun thoroughly is essential before starting any project.
Properly dispose of waste
A large part of any artist’s career will be spent dealing with their leftover materials. This can include paint, brushes, oils, glues, etc. These are all very different substances that require various amounts of time to properly destroy- some even containing hazardous chemicals.
Most artists have an assistant or friend they work out of who helps them with these things, but how well you deal with your trash may still affect your art! There are many ways to responsibly discard of your art supplies.
Some suggestions: use safe disposal methods at home, donate your unused supplies to worthy organizations, and/or spread around the word to other people for extra tips.
