If this does not happen then some parts of the painted item will remain porous, showing part of the liquid inside.
This could possibly seep out and run down the wash process or even worse, come off due to friction. Acrylics also dry very quickly so it may peel away before it can fully solidify.
These things can severely damage or destroy an expensive piece of clothing so it must be done with care.
